Electronic Toothbrush - Better Oral Hygiene Or Lazy Tooth Cleaning?

Dental hygiene is very important for your health and well-being. It is something we are told about when we are young, but we do not all take into account until it is too late. I probably first heard about an electronic toothbrush when I was a teenager in the 1970s, and until recently I still considered them tooth cleaners for sloths.

According to Wikipedia, the electric toothbrush was invented in Switzerland in 1954 for people with low motor capacity. The first model was called Broxodent, not very memorable, but it is obvious that the invention was good and that it is gaining popularity with many different models.

We all get familiar with nylon bristle toothbrushes when we're babies. We are taught to press fruit-flavored toothpaste on our brushes and brush our teeth and gums up and down and everywhere. Our parents make it a fun game, but growing up it becomes a chore rather than a game, and cleaning teeth becomes easier to cut short or even miss.

Then, when you start to be attracted to boyfriends or girlfriends, oral hygiene picks up quickly because you don't want to approach with bad breath. You can continue to take care of your teeth regularly, but how often does a quick cleansing replace careful brushing and preventing gum disease?

Gum disease - it won't happen to me - you may think, but it can happen to anyone. The teeth come off and move, you start to lose them, as well as your pretty smile. If you're a smoker, you may not even notice the attack, as smoking masks gum disease. If you don't start taking oral hygiene seriously, you may lose your teeth and suffer from many toothaches along the way.

There are two types of electronic toothbrushes, vibration and rotation-oscillation brushes. Although 75% of dentists, including mine, recommend them, researchers have found that most of them are no better for teeth and gums than a manual toothbrush. I guess one can translate this into the fact that some models are better than others like anything else, although the rotation-oscillation type turned out to be slightly better.

The search obviously depends on whether you brush your teeth for 2 minutes or not, or correctly, or often enough. If you don't use an electric toothbrush, it's better for you than to brush your teeth half by hand. I have finally come to believe that they are an indispensable part of the lazy tooth cleaner and that they can actually help anyone with gum disease.

The research will also depend on the models tested. Some of the rechargeable models claim to remove twice as much plaque as the regular manual brush type and help whiten teeth. They also help stimulate the gums and keep them healthier.

Let's forget about the search for now and look at what I found.

I had a complete dentition and no problem until 5 years ago, when the first one was extracted. I was losing them at the rate of one a year until I accepted that quick manual brushing twice a day did nothing to solve the gum disease that my dentist kept warning me about. I smoked for 40 years and I stopped 19 months ago, that's when the masking stopped and I could feel gum disease. I bought a rechargeable toothbrush on the recommendation of my dentist and helped to reduce gum disease by properly cleaning my teeth and regularly using a recommended mouthwash.

I stopped having a toothache, my gums are fine, my teeth are not as loose and I haven't lost a tooth since. The manual has been thrown in the trash and I have a second electronic toothbrush in my case because I don't want to deprive myself of it when I travel. Yes, they are better for my oral hygiene and not just for the lazy.
